PEG 4000 is a white, waxy, free-flowing powder with an average molecular weight of 3 500–4 500 Da, produced via ethylene oxide polymerization under alkaline conditions. It is odorless, non-volatile, and readily soluble in water, acetone, ethanol, and other polar solvents, forming clear, viscous solutions. Key specifications include: pH (5 % solution) 4.5–7.5, water content ≤1 %, ash ≤0.2 %, heavy metals ≤10 ppm, and melting range 54–58 °C. Functionally, PEG 4000 acts as a high-molecular-weight binder, lubricant, plasticizer, and sustained-release matrix in pharmaceutical tablets and capsules, a thickening/structuring agent in cosmetics and personal-care products, and a dispersing aid or anti-static coating in industrial powders. It is certified USP/EP/JP, non-toxic, non-irritating, and stable for at least 3 years when stored in sealed containers below 25 °C and 60 % relative humidity.
